May 2002 — Santorini, Greece
Film Photography

White buildings and terraces overlooking the deep blue sea in Santorini, with a small boat leaving a wake across the water below.

Everything looked unreal.

White walls.
Blue sea.
Sharp sunlight.

As if someone had increased the contrast of the world.

It was our first long trip together — Turkey and Greece, moving from city to city with backpacks and a very loose plan.

Santorini was only supposed to be a short stop.

Just a day trip from Crete.

Go. Walk around. Take a few photos. Leave.

Simple.

But the wind was too strong that day.

The boat couldn’t dock properly.

Waves kept hitting the harbor, again and again.

So the schedule changed.

No return ferry.

No choice.

We had to stay the night.

At first, it felt inconvenient.

One more night.
Extra money.
No clear plan.

But sometimes life quietly rearranges things for you.

Before you even understand why.

I remember climbing the steps slowly, turning corners between white buildings.

Every view looked like a postcard.

I kept laughing a little.

It almost felt fake — like a movie set.

The blue of the sea was endless.

Boats looked tiny from above, leaving thin white lines behind them.

The sun was bright, but the wind was cool.

Everything felt open and wide.

I lifted my camera almost without thinking.

Not to “capture beauty.”

Just because it was impossible not to.

Looking back now, I think this photo is less about Santorini itself.

It’s about that small accident.

That unexpected delay.

If the boat had arrived on time, we would have left.

No sunset walk.
No extra conversations.
No slow evening.

And no this image.

Sometimes the best moments are not planned.

They happen when something goes wrong.

Or when life gently says,
“Stay a little longer.”

When I see this photograph now, I still feel that same blue.

Wide. Bright. Limitless.

A quiet reminder —

beauty doesn’t always come when we schedule it.

Sometimes it arrives by surprise.

And all we have to do is stay long enough to notice.
