Black-and-white film photograph of a man in side profile sitting on a sailboat, wearing glasses and a jacket, holding a line or rope, with water and a distant shoreline blurred behind him. The image has visible grain and a rough texture.

This was taken from Pat’s point of view.

I’ve always loved the roughness of this frame —
the grain, the contrast, the wind against the light.
Nothing polished. Nothing posed.
Just real.

It was our second time sailing in Port Dover.

And the funny thing —
the sailboat was made in Taiwan.

Like me.

At the time, it just felt like a small detail,
something that made us smile.

We didn’t know yet
that this post-pandemic trip
was quietly preparing us for something bigger.

A new country.
A new life.
A decision we hadn’t fully spoken out loud.

Looking back now,
it feels like the wind was already pushing us forward.

Not fast.
Not dramatic.

Just steady.

Like a sail slowly filling with air
before you realize
you’re already moving.
